Food

The letter 'D' key on my keyboard's not working well that it's really pissing me off.
Anyway, I made some sata andagi today. It is also known as Okinawan donuts. Recipe @ www.recipezaar.com. I cut the sugar down and fried them a little longer for the extra crisp. They taste like kuih bahulu. They were supposed to be round but some shaped like snowman so mom was saying I should decorate them like ginger breadman.
Also, it's Ramadhan so it's food galore for the whole month til Raya. Mom buys 'kuihs' everyday so teatime is something to really look forward to. :D

'Twas the Night Before Then
God's sweet. It's been raining and the temp's really nice. Feels like autumn and Coco's fur's growing long at a fairly alarming rate.
Random knowledge: my surname, 张, is pronounced as 'chou' in Japanese.
I received an email of Singapore Kendo Association today, inviting me to their biennial recruitment on this Sept 15. Argh, it sure is frustrating.
Other than that, girlfriend Esther was back for a short holiday from Deutschland unexpected so my nightlife was 'temporarily revived' by bumming at the local
bar. I have to point out that their sauteed mushroom is too die for. The sauce is excellent with soft buns. I'll definitely bring you guys there if you are visiting. Though I might wanna suggest to put on some mozzie repellant. Just in case you are interested to know where I grew up, here you
go.

Milo. White Boy on Lomo app.
So yeah ok, I'm off. I'm hooked on Ranch Rush. :)

Beware of the Red Poop

Lord did have mercy on us and He made it rained the other day so I took the opportunity to bake the critically-acclaimed Southern U.S. classic, Red Velvet Cake. Recipe found at www.joyofbaking.com. The ingredients for the cream cheese frosting was kinda hard to find (where the hell can I get MASCARPONE in this god-forsaken place) so I searched for alternative using Philly cream cheese @ www.simplyrecipes.com
Well, I'm not sure if I did right but it tasted just like any other cake while the cream cheese frosting was just decadent. Too decadant and sinful. I might wanna add that it's quite a choice for a wedding cake, y'know, with some black fondant roses and bows and stuff. ^_^
Truth be told, I photoshopped this photo for visual aesthetic value. The cake wasn't this bright, in fact it was darker like those gorgeous dark red roses. And it was much messier, crumbly, to be precise. LOL
Anyway, I'm forseeing my family to produce red poop tomorrow. LMAO

Japan for Sustainability
Kewpie Japan uses at least 3.8 billion eggs per year to produce Japan's most-loved mayo. One should know that mayo's primarily made of egg yolk, oil and vinegar. So have you ever wonder what happen to the rest of the eggs (eggshell & white)? Well, I got the answer from watching D no Arashi. You guys should watch it sometimes, you get to learn really interesting stuff there.
Anyway, back to eggs. I found out that Kewpie recycle them by making writing chalks from eggshells while eggwhites to meringue candies. Now, do you know what is your oil blotting paper made of? Egg membrane. I don't know, maybe I'm just a nerd but isn't that amazing?!

Getting Downright Hot in Here
It's 90F in the living room right now. The dogs are lethagic, sleeping their way through the day while I have gobbled down at least 4 sticks of ice creams already to combat the bloody heat. I've been taking showers three times a day for more than a week already. Running isn't something pleasant to do of late so I stopped baking pies but I somehow, finally, hit the 250km mark yesterday. Nothing to talk about apart from that so I'm just gonna stop here. But not before showering you with an eye candy.

Sho Sakurai of Arashi. Yes, this homeboy has navel piercing (which I find a bit icky).
::edit:: somehow when I looked at this picture, the chest area looked heavily photoshopped. LOL

Auschwitz of the East
Unit 731. Google it up. Or maybe not cos you might hate me for exposing you to such violent history facts. Perhaps, the title of this post is wrong, Auschwitz was almost nothing compared to 731. Really.
So I finally watched Letters from Iwo Jima. Quite an interesting piece, depicting the Japanese Imperial Army side of the story of Battle of Iwo Jima. US Marines' story is Flags of Our Fathers. Both directed by Clint Eastwood. The month-long battle is one of the fiercest battles in Pacific Campaign and also produced a Pulitzer-winning photograph. It's not as graphic as The Schindler's List and talking about Schindler's List, that huge pile of burned corpses still stuck in my head til now.
So yeah. But but but Schindler's List is definitely one of the must-watch-movies. Go watch it. My mum said I was weird after watching the movie. Maybe I shouldn't watch it then. I was just 15.
